Robert Randall Bragan (October 30, 1917 – January 21, 2010)
was an American shortstop, catcher, manager, and coach in Major League Baseball and an influential minor league executive. His professional baseball career encompassed 73 years, from his first season as a player in the Class D Alabama–Florida League in 1937 to 2009, the last full year of his life, when he was still listed as a consultant to the Texas Rangers' organization. He’s the Golden Spikes Award winner, the Dick Howser Trophy winner and Baseball America’s Player of the Year. Yet those collegiate baseball honors don’t aptly fit Ivan Melendez profile as much as the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award does. “It’s special because it represents what I try to do on the field and off the field,” Melendez said this week. “I don’t want to just dominate on the field, I want to dominate off of it, too.”

Today, Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, would have been Bobby Bragan's 100th birthday and the City of Fort Worth proclaimed it Bobby Bragan Day. He was known as "Mr. Baseball" in Fort Worth due to his long baseball career, as well as the fact that he was the player/manager of the Fort Worth Cats from 1948-1952. Bragan played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and would go on to manage in the majors for the Pirates, Indians and Braves. READ MORE…
