The Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award presented by SR Bats announced today the finalists for the 2019 award. The four finalists are Texas Tech’s Josh Jung, Tulane’s Kody Hoese, New Mexico State’s Nick Gonzales and Texas Tech’s Cameron Warren.
The BBCSA, created by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation, was open to nominations from all Division I baseball programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The BBCSA originally had 30 players nominated for the award at the beginning of the season and added 18 players to its midseason watch list. The award is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity.
“We are excited about the four finalists for the 2019 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award presented by SR Bats,” said Tracy Taylor, Executive Director, Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award. “The hard work of our Selection Committee is certainly evident in the fact that two of our finalists, Josh Jung and Kody Hoese, were selected in the first round of the MLB Draft and another player, Nick Gonzales, led the nation in hitting this year. The other finalist, Cameron Warren, hit .500 in the NCAA Regional last weekend and homered in every game helping to propel his team to a Super Regional,” said Taylor.
“This has been an exciting year for the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award on many fronts,” Taylor continued. “It’s been the first year with a corporate sponsor (SR Bats). It’s also been our first year with a regional scope, covering all D1 programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. And it’s been the first year with players from the watch list being chosen in the first round of the MLB Draft. The BBCSA watch list had four players chosen in the first 75 picks of the MLB Draft.”
“Not only are they great ballplayers, but they are also excellent student-athletes and better young men. They have garnered multiple academic awards and truly represent what the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award presented by SR Bats is all about.“Tracy Taylor, Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Executive Director
The winner of the BBCSA will be announced later this month and honored at a gala in the fall.
Texas Tech’s Hunter Hargrove won the initial BBCSA in 2017 while Dallas Baptist’s Devlin Granberg took home the honor in 2018.
